dear sparrow

each morning I watch you

sitting alone

on a telephone pole

rain or shine

today I purchased

lumber to build

you the finest birdhouse

with a red front porch

yellow umbrella

can sit under

have afternoon tea

I want to know everything

about you

how flying in the clouds

makes you blasé

about things

you cannot change

why you prefer aloneness

to chit -chat

why you never worry

about tomorrow

or where

your next meal comes from

let us have lunch today

I’ve much to learn

from you

Wood warbler chest-full of music and dance, flutters his wings before puffing onto a limb. Finally, he settles in to welcome a new day filled with holy wonder and grace. Dawn comes up behind the tree line, spilling colors of sweet mountain heather over our land.
